Astatine is the rarest naturally occurring element on Earth. Only about 25 grams exist in the crust at any time.

About Astatine

No element occurs less abundantly in nature than astatine. Estimates place the total quantity present in the crust at roughly 25 grams at any given moment, the whole of it produced continuously by the decay of heavier nuclides. Astatine holds atomic number 85 and a relative atomic mass of 210.0, and its [Xe] 4f14 5d10 6s2 6p5 configuration makes it the heaviest halogen in group 17 of period 6. The Pauling electronegativity is 2.2, the lowest of the halogens, and the element is a solid at standard conditions rather than the volatile species its lighter relatives form. Because samples large enough to see have never been assembled, much of what is known about astatine chemistry rests on tracer-scale experiments.
