Cerium is the most abundant rare earth element. It is used in catalytic converters, glass polishing, and self-cleaning ovens.

About Cerium

The most abundant of the rare earth elements, cerium (Ce) is more common in Earth's crust than copper or tin. Element 58 belongs to the lanthanide series in period 6 of the f-block, with an atomic mass of 140.12, the electron configuration [Xe] 4f¹ 5d¹ 6s², and a Pauling electronegativity of 1.12. Its ready shift between the +3 and +4 oxidation states makes it a useful oxidation catalyst, notably in catalytic converters and the linings of self-cleaning ovens. Cerium oxide is also a premier polishing compound for glass and optics. The metal is soft, iron-gray, and solid at standard temperature and pressure.
