Debris from the first hydrogen bomb test yielded the earliest samples of einsteinium, the element having formed in the intense neutron flux of the explosion and been recovered from the fallout afterwards. It is named for Albert Einstein and carries atomic number 99 with a relative atomic mass of 252.0. The configuration [Rn] 5f11 7s2 places it deep in the actinide series of period 7, and its electronegativity is 1.3; it is a solid under standard conditions. Einsteinium is synthetic, intensely radioactive, and available only in quantities far too small for any application beyond laboratory study. What chemistry is known has been established on samples measured in micrograms or less.
