At atomic number 118, oganesson is the heaviest element yet made and the current terminus of the periodic table. It is named for Yuri Oganessian, whose laboratory pioneered the synthesis of superheavy nuclei. The relative atomic mass is 294.0 and the configuration [Rn] 5f14 6d10 7s2 7p6 completes the 7p subshell, placing the element in group 18 with the noble gases. That placement may be misleading. Calculations indicate oganesson would not share the inertness of the lighter noble gases, and relativistic effects on its outer electrons are expected to be strong enough to leave it appreciably reactive; its properties remain formally unknown.
