Corrosion-resistant and tough, nickel is a silvery transition metal with a faint golden tinge, used in coinage, stainless steel, and a wide range of alloys. It has atomic number 28 and an atomic mass of 58.693, a density of 8.91 g/cm³, and a melting point of 1728 K. Its [Ar] 3d8 4s2 configuration gives an electronegativity of 1.91 and a first ionization energy of 737 kJ/mol. Axel Fredrik Cronstedt first isolated the metal in 1751. Beyond structural alloys, nickel serves in rechargeable batteries and as a catalyst. It occupies group 10, period 4.
