A DC current of 200-400 A/m² dissolves Cu from the anode and deposits it on thin copper starter sheets (cathodes) over 10-14 days. Impurities less noble than Cu (Fe, Ni, Zn) remain in solution; more noble metals (Au, Ag, Se, Te) fall to the tank bottom as anode slime.
