Genel Bakış
Styrene undergoes free radical addition polymerization to form polystyrene. The vinyl group polymerizes while the pendant phenyl groups provide rigidity and transparency. Expanded polystyrene (EPS) foam is produced by incorporating a blowing agent during polymerization.
Günlük Örnek
Styrofoam cups, food containers, packing peanuts, and insulation boards are all expanded polystyrene from this polymerization.
Endüstriyel Önemi
Over 15 million tonnes of polystyrene are produced annually for packaging, insulation, disposable cutlery, and electronics housings.
