Kupfer an seiner blaugrünen Flamme erkennen
Ziel
Die charakteristische blaugrüne Flamme von Kupfer(II)-Ionen beobachten — einer der visuell eindrucksvollsten Flammentests.
Hintergrund
Copper produces a brilliant blue-green flame due to emission from excited Cu2+ ions. When copper(II) chloride is used, the emission is enhanced because volatile CuCl molecules form in the flame, producing particularly vivid colors. The blue-green color of copper flames has been used in fireworks for centuries.
Sicherheitswarnungen
- Wear safety goggles at all times
- Copper compounds are toxic — do not ingest
- Wash hands thoroughly after handling copper salts
- Keep hair tied back near open flames
Erforderliche PSA
Materialien
-
Copper(II) sulfate (CuSO₄) (1 g)Blue crystals
-
Hydrochloric acid (HCl) (10 mL)1M concentration
-
Distilled water (50 mL)For cleaning
Ausrüstung
Durchführung
Clean the nichrome wire by dipping in HCl and heating until no color appears.
Place a small amount of copper(II) sulfate on the watch glass.
Dip the clean wire into HCl, then into the copper(II) sulfate sample.
Hold the wire in the Bunsen burner flame and observe the vibrant blue-green color.
Record the color and note any variations as the sample is consumed.
Erwartete Ergebnisse
A vivid blue-green to green flame should appear. The color is one of the most distinctive and easily recognized of all flame tests. The flame may show different shades as the copper compound volatilizes.
Aufräumen
Clean the wire with HCl. Dispose of copper compound waste in designated heavy metal waste container. Wash hands thoroughly.
