Copper sulfate is one of the oldest and most widely used fungicides in agriculture, first applied as Bordeaux mixture (copper sulfate + lime) in French vineyards in 1882 to control downy mildew (Plasmopara viticola). Copper sulfate pentahydrate is produced by dissolving copper metal or copper oxide in dilute sulfuric acid (10-30%) with air oxidation at 50-80 degrees C. The saturated solution is crystallized by cooling to produce large blue triclinic crystals. For Bordeaux mixture, copper sulfate solution is mixed with slaked lime (Ca(OH)2) just before application to form the active copper hydroxide precipitate.
