Lutetium is the last element in the lanthanide series. It is used in PET scan detectors, petroleum refining, and as a catalyst.

About Lutetium

The final element of the lanthanide series, lutetium (Lu) completes the f-block before the periodic table returns to the transition metals. Element 71 has an atomic mass of 174.97, the electron configuration [Xe] 4f¹⁴ 5d¹ 6s², and the highest electronegativity of the series at 1.27. Hard and dense compared with its lighter relatives, lutetium is used in the scintillator crystals of PET scanners and as a catalyst in petroleum cracking and other industrial reactions. It is one of the rarest and costliest of the rare earths to isolate. The silvery metal is solid at standard conditions.
