Osmium is the densest naturally occurring element. It is used in fountain pen nibs, electrical contacts, and as a staining agent in microscopy.

About Osmium

Denser than any other naturally occurring element, osmium (Os) is a hard, brittle, bluish-white member of the platinum group. Element 76 lies in group 8 of period 6 in the d-block, with an atomic mass of 190.23, the electron configuration [Xe] 4f¹⁴ 5d⁶ 6s², and a Pauling electronegativity of 2.2. Its extreme hardness led to historic use in the tips of fountain-pen nibs and in durable electrical contacts, while osmium tetroxide is a valuable staining agent in electron microscopy. The metal is solid at standard conditions and, though usually alloyed with other platinum-group metals, is prized wherever exceptional wear resistance is required.
