H2O2 + 2H+ + 2I− → I2 + 2H2O
Visão geral
Hydrogen peroxide oxidizes iodide ions to iodine in acidic solution. H₂O₂ acts as the oxidizing agent, being reduced to water. The appearance of brown iodine (or blue-black with starch indicator) demonstrates the oxidizing power of H₂O₂. This reaction is used in iodometric analysis.
Participantes
| Papel | Substância | Coeficiente | Estado |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reagente | Hydrogen Peroxide H₂O₂ | 1 | (aq) |
| Reagente | Iodine I | 2 | (aq) |
| Produto | Water H₂O | 2 | (l) |
Exemplo do cotidiano
The iodine clock reaction, a popular chemistry demonstration with sudden color changes, uses variations of this H₂O₂-iodide reaction.
Importância industrial
Compreender o H₂O₂ como oxidante é importante para o branqueamento de pasta de papel, o tratamento de água e a síntese orgânica. A reação do relógio de iodo é uma das demonstrações mais populares para ensinar cinética química.
