About Chromium

Isolated by Louis Nicolas Vauquelin in 1797, chromium is a hard, lustrous transition metal of atomic number 24 and atomic mass 51.996. It has a density of 7.15 g/cm³ and a high melting point of 2180 K. Its configuration [Ar] 3d5 4s1, an exception to the expected filling order, gives an electronegativity of 1.66 and a first ionization energy of 653 kJ/mol. Chromium can take a mirror-like polish and resists tarnishing, properties central to chrome plating and, above all, to stainless steel, where it confers corrosion resistance. The metal occupies group 6, period 4, in the middle of the first transition series.
