MgCO3 → MgO + CO2
نظرة عامة
Magnesium carbonate decomposes when heated above 350 C to form magnesium oxide and carbon dioxide. This reaction occurs at a lower temperature than calcium carbonate decomposition because magnesium carbonate is less thermally stable. It is used in the production of magnesia for refractory applications.

مثال من الحياة اليومية
Gymnasts and rock climbers use magnesium carbonate (chalk) on their hands, which is produced and processed using knowledge of this decomposition.
الأهمية الصناعية
Magnesium oxide produced by this decomposition is used as a refractory material in furnace linings, as a medicine (antacid), and in magnesium metal production.
