Objective

Background

Iron rusts when it is oxidized by oxygen in the presence of water. Various methods can prevent this: physical barriers (oil, paint), galvanizing (zinc coating), and sacrificial anodes (zinc blocks). The galvanic methods work because zinc is more reactive than iron and corrodes preferentially.

  • Zinc strip (1 piece)
    Wrap around one nail
  • Copper wire (30 cm)

  • Petroleum jelly (small amount)

  • Sodium chloride (NaCl) (30 g)
    Salt water accelerates rusting
  • Distilled water (300 mL)

Procedure

Label six test tubes: Control, Oil, Nail Polish, Zinc, Copper, Dry.

Prepare nails: coat one with petroleum jelly, one with nail polish, wrap one with zinc strip, wrap one with copper wire, leave two uncoated.

Prepare salt water: dissolve 10 g NaCl in 100 mL water.

Place one prepared nail in each test tube. Add salt water to all except the Dry tube. The Dry tube gets a dry nail as additional control.

Observe all tubes immediately and record initial appearance.

Check all tubes after 24 hours, 48 hours, and 1 week. Record the extent of rust formation in each.

Cleanup

Dispose of salt water down the drain. Discard rusty nails. Clean test tubes.
