4Fe + 3O2 → 2Fe2O3 (prevented)
Aperçu
Oil or grease coating prevents iron oxidation by creating a physical barrier that excludes water and oxygen from the iron surface. Without both oxygen and water in contact with iron, the electrochemical corrosion cells cannot form. This is one of the simplest and oldest corrosion prevention methods.
Participants
| Rôle | Substance | Coefficient | État |
|---|---|---|---|
| Réactif | Oxygen O | 3 | (g) |
| Réactif | Iron Fe | 4 | (s) |
| Produit | Iron(III) Oxide Fe₂O₃ | 2 | (s) |
Exemple du quotidien
Applying WD-40 or oil to tools, bicycle chains, and hinges prevents rust by displacing water and sealing out oxygen.
Importance industrielle
Corrosion prevention coatings (oils, paints, polymers) represent a multi-billion dollar industry essential for extending the life of steel structures and machinery.
