Dysprosium is used in neodymium magnets to improve high-temperature performance. It has the highest magnetic susceptibility of any element.

About Dysprosium

Possessing the highest magnetic susceptibility of any element, dysprosium (Dy) is a lanthanide of exceptional importance to modern magnets. Element 66 lies in period 6 of the f-block, with an atomic mass of 162.5, the electron configuration [Xe] 4f¹⁰ 6s², and a Pauling electronegativity of 1.22. It is added to neodymium-iron-boron magnets to preserve their strength at the high operating temperatures of electric-vehicle motors and wind turbines. Dysprosium also appears in specialized alloys and reactor control-rod materials. A soft, silvery metal, it is solid at standard conditions.
