Selenium is a nonmetal that occurs in several allotropes—black, red, and gray forms—and carries atomic number 34 with an atomic mass of 78.971. The gray form is a solid with a density of 4.81 g/cm³ that melts at 494 K. Six valence electrons ([Ar] 3d10 4s2 4p4) give an electronegativity of 2.55 and a first ionization energy of 941 kJ/mol. Jöns Jacob Berzelius discovered the element in 1817. An essential trace element for humans in small amounts, selenium is also used in glass, electronics, and solar cells. It belongs to group 16, period 4, in the same family as oxygen and sulfur.
