Lawrencium is the last element in the actinide series, named after Ernest O. Lawrence. It has the shortest half-life of any actinide.

About Lawrencium

Lawrencium closes the actinide series at atomic number 103, and no member of that series decays faster; its half-life is the shortest of the fourteen. Named for Ernest O. Lawrence, the inventor of the cyclotron, it has a relative atomic mass of 266.0 and an electronegativity of 1.3, and is a solid under standard conditions. Its configuration, [Rn] 5f14 7s2 7p1, is notable in its own right: the outermost electron occupies a 7p orbital rather than the 6d orbital that simple periodic reasoning would predict, a departure attributed to relativistic effects on the innermost electrons of so heavy an atom. On that basis some classifications assign the element to the d-block.
