Flame tests are qualitative analytical techniques that identify metal ions by the characteristic colors they produce when heated in a Bunsen burner flame. Each metal emits light at specific wavelengths as its electrons return from excited states to ground states — a direct application of quantum mechanics. This centuries-old technique remains a fast, simple screening method in both educational and forensic settings.
Learning Objectives
Students learn to identify common metal cations by flame color: lithium (crimson red), sodium (intense yellow), potassium (lilac/violet), calcium (orange-red), barium (apple green), copper (blue-green), and strontium (bright red). The experiments connect atomic emission spectra to electron energy levels, introducing core quantum chemistry concepts.
Key Techniques
Clean a platinum or nichrome wire loop by dipping in concentrated HCl and heating until no color is visible. Dip the clean wire into the sample solution and hold in the hottest part of the flame (just above the inner blue cone). Observe the color immediately, as some colors are fleeting. For potassium detection alongside sodium (which overwhelms visually), view through cobalt blue glass to filter out sodium's yellow.
Equipment Overview
Required: Bunsen burner, nichrome or platinum wire loops, concentrated HCl for cleaning, sample solutions of metal chlorides, cobalt blue glass filter. Spectroscopes provide more precise wavelength data than visual observation alone. Cost is minimal — flame tests are among the most affordable analytical experiments.
