About Neon

Best known for the reddish-orange light it emits when electrified, neon is an inert noble gas of atomic number 10 and atomic mass 20.18. Its electrons completely fill the second shell ([He] 2s2 2p6), a closed configuration that leaves eight valence electrons, no tendency to bond, and a very high ionization energy of 2081 kJ/mol. The colorless gas liquefies at 27 K. William Ramsay discovered it in 1898. Though neon is the fifth most abundant element in the universe, it is scarce in Earth's air, and its characteristic glow in gas-discharge tubes became the basis of illuminated signage. Neon sits in group 18, period 2.
