Hóa học chống sâu răng trong mỗi ống kem đánh răng
Tổng quan
Sodium fluoride (NaF) and sodium monofluorophosphate (MFP, Na₂PO₃F) are the primary fluoride sources in toothpaste, providing the fluoride ions that remineralize tooth enamel and prevent dental caries. The addition of fluoride to toothpaste, introduced in the 1950s (Crest with stannous fluoride), is considered one of the top public health achievements of the 20th century. Fluoride in toothpaste typically ranges from 1,000 to 1,500 ppm, replacing hydroxyl groups in hydroxyapatite with fluorapatite, which is more resistant to acid dissolution.
Quy trình hóa học
Sodium fluoride is produced by neutralizing hydrofluoric acid with sodium hydroxide or sodium carbonate. For dental-grade NaF, high purity is required (<50 ppm heavy metals). Sodium monofluorophosphate is synthesized by reacting sodium trimetaphosphate with NaF at 600 degrees C. The fluoride compounds are milled to fine particle size and blended into toothpaste formulations with abrasives (silica, calcium carbonate), humectants (glycerol, sorbitol), binders, and surfactants.
Na₃P₃O₉ + NaF →[600 degrees C] 3Na₂PO₃F (sodium monofluorophosphate synthesis)
Ca₁₀(PO₄)₆(OH)₂ + 2F⁻ → Ca₁₀(PO₄)₆F₂ + 2OH⁻ (fluorapatite formation on teeth — the protective mechanism)
Nguyên liệu thô
-
Hydrofluoric acid (HF) — Reaction of fluorite (CaF₂) with H₂SO₄ (Fluoride source)
-
Sodium hydroxide (NaOH) or Na₂CO₃ — Chlor-alkali process / Solvay process (Neutralizing agent)
-
Sodium trimetaphosphate (Na₃P₃O₉) — Thermal processing of sodium phosphate (MFP precursor)
Sản phẩm cuối
-
Sodium fluoride (NaF) — Toothpaste, mouth rinse, water fluoridation (Dental grade, 1,000-1,500 ppm F⁻ in toothpaste)
-
Sodium monofluorophosphate (Na₂PO₃F, MFP) — Toothpaste (compatible with calcium abrasives) (0.76% in toothpaste = 1,000 ppm F⁻)
Environmental Impact
Fluoride mining (fluorite) has localized environmental impacts. Excess fluoride in wastewater can contaminate water sources. Toothpaste fluoride at usage concentrations is safe and environmentally benign. Water fluoridation programs add NaF at 0.7 ppm, well below WHO guidelines. Fluoride is naturally present in many water sources.
Lưu ý an toàn
- ⚠ Hydrofluoric acid is one of the most dangerous industrial chemicals — causes deep tissue burns and systemic fluoride poisoning
- ⚠ NaF is toxic if ingested in quantity — LD₅₀ 52 mg/kg (oral, rat)
- ⚠ Fluorite dust causes fluorosis with chronic exposure
- ⚠ Toothpaste with >1,500 ppm fluoride requires prescription in some countries
Đổi mới gần đây
Stannous fluoride (SnF₂) provides anti-gingivitis benefits in addition to cavity prevention.
