It honours Enrico Fermi and holds atomic number 100 with a relative atomic mass of 257.0. The configuration [Rn] 5f12 7s2 places it late in the actinide series of period 7, and its Pauling electronegativity is given as 1.3. Under standard conditions it is a solid. Fermium marks a practical boundary in actinide production: it is the heaviest element that can be made in weighable amounts by neutron irradiation in a reactor, and everything past it requires bombardment with charged particles in an accelerator instead.
