The name honours Dmitri Mendeleev, whose periodic table furnished the framework into which such elements are placed. Mendelevium carries atomic number 101 and a relative atomic mass of 258.0, with the configuration [Rn] 5f13 7s2 and an electronegativity of 1.3, and it is a solid at standard temperature and pressure. Because it must be produced by accelerator bombardment rather than reactor irradiation, the quantities available have never exceeded what can be studied by tracer and single-atom chemical techniques.
