라돈 개요

Radon forms wherever radium decays, which places this radioactive noble gas in soils, rock and building foundations across large parts of the inhabited surface. It is element 86, with a relative atomic mass of 222.0 and the closed-shell configuration [Xe] 4f14 5d10 6s2 6p6 that terminates period 6 in group 18. Its electronegativity is given as 2.2, and unlike the other elements of its period it is a gas at standard temperature and pressure. Public-health significance follows directly from that volatility: radon accumulates in enclosed indoor air, and prolonged exposure makes it the leading cause of lung cancer among people who have never smoked. Mitigation therefore centres on ventilation and on sealing the pathways by which soil gas enters a building.
