El actinio es un elemento radiactivo que brilla en azul en la oscuridad. Es el primer elemento de la serie de los actínidos y se investiga para radioterapia.

Acerca de Actinio

Actinium opens the actinide series and lends the fourteen elements that follow it their collective name. It carries atomic number 89 and a relative atomic mass of 227.0, and its [Rn] 6d1 7s2 configuration places a single d electron above the radon core in period 7 of the f-block. The Pauling electronegativity is 1.1 and the element is a solid under standard conditions. Its radioactivity is intense enough that samples emit a blue glow in darkness, produced as the emitted radiation excites surrounding air. The same decay behaviour has made actinium a subject of medical research, where short-range alpha emission from the element is being investigated as a way of delivering radiation therapy to targeted tissue while sparing the material around it.
