El neptunio fue el primer elemento transuránico sintético, bautizado en honor al planeta Neptuno. Es un subproducto de los reactores nucleares.

Acerca de Neptunio

Neptunium was the first transuranium element to be made artificially, and the naming followed the sequence of the outer planets: the element beyond uranium took the name of the planet beyond Uranus. It holds atomic number 93 and a relative atomic mass of 237.0, with the configuration [Rn] 5f4 6d1 7s2 and an electronegativity of 1.36. The metal is solid under standard conditions and belongs to the actinide series of period 7. In practice, neptunium arises chiefly as a byproduct of reactor operation, formed when uranium fuel captures neutrons without undergoing fission. Its long-lived isotope is consequently a significant component of the actinide inventory that has to be accounted for in spent-fuel management.
