El meitnerio debe su nombre a Lise Meitner, la física que contribuyó al descubrimiento de la fisión nuclear.

Acerca de Meitnerio

Lise Meitner, whose interpretation of experimental results established that heavy nuclei can split, is commemorated in the name of element 109. Meitnerium has a relative atomic mass of 278.0 and the configuration [Rn] 5f14 6d7 7s2, which places it in group 9 of period 7 below iridium. Its electronegativity has not been determined, and its chemical properties remain unknown; the classification given to it reflects that uncertainty rather than any measured behaviour. Every atom of meitnerium so far observed has been made in an accelerator and identified indirectly, from the sequence of alpha decays that follows its formation.
