The first element of the lanthanide series, lanthanum (La) gives the entire family of rare earths its name, from the Greek for to lie hidden. Element 57 falls in period 6 of the f-block, with an atomic mass of 138.91, the electron configuration [Xe] 5d¹ 6s², and a low Pauling electronegativity of 1.1. A soft, silvery, reactive metal, it is used in high-refractive-index optical glass for camera and telescope lenses, as a catalyst in petroleum refining, and in the electrodes of nickel-metal-hydride batteries. Lanthanum is solid at standard conditions and typically adopts the +3 state shared across the series.
