Its atomic number is 104, its relative atomic mass 267.0, and its configuration [Rn] 5f14 6d2 7s2 places it in group 4 of period 7, directly below hafnium among the transition metals. No electronegativity value is established for the element, reflecting how little of its bulk chemistry has been measured. Rutherfordium is produced only in accelerators, atom by atom, and it decays within seconds; what is known of its behaviour comes from rapid chemical separations carried out on single atoms before they disappear.
