Ytterbium (Yb) is a soft, silvery lanthanide, element 70, in period 6 of the f-block. Its atomic mass is 173.05, its electron configuration [Xe] 4f¹⁴ 6s², and its Pauling electronegativity 1.1, among the lowest in the series. Because its electrical resistance rises sharply under pressure, ytterbium is used in stress and seismic gauges; it also serves in certain lasers and as a metallurgical additive that refines the grain and improves the mechanical properties of stainless steel. Solid at standard conditions, it can adopt the +2 oxidation state in addition to the usual +3.
