It is a solid at standard temperature and pressure and belongs to the f-block of period 7. Its abundance and nuclear behaviour together explain sustained research interest in thorium as a reactor fuel, an application investigated as an alternative to the uranium fuel cycle that currently dominates civil nuclear power. Unlike most members of the series, thorium is recovered from ordinary mineral processing rather than produced in a reactor.
