El polonio es un elemento raro y muy radiactivo descubierto por Marie Curie. Se ha empleado como fuente de calor en satélites espaciales.

Acerca de Polonio

Marie Curie identified polonium during her investigation of radioactive residues, and it remains among the rarest constituents of the crust. Its atomic number is 84, its relative atomic mass 209.0, and its configuration [Xe] 4f14 5d10 6s2 6p4 places it in group 16 of period 6 with an electronegativity of 2.0. It is a solid at standard temperature and pressure and is grouped with the post-transition metals. Intense radioactivity dominates every practical aspect of its handling. That same property has been turned to use: the decay heat of polonium has served as a compact thermal source aboard space satellites, where a small mass can sustain equipment temperature without any moving parts.
