Berkelium takes its name from Berkeley, California, where the element was first produced in 1949 at the University of California. It is a synthetic actinide of atomic number 97 with a relative atomic mass of 247.0, a configuration of [Rn] 5f9 7s2, and an electronegativity of 1.3. Under standard conditions it is a solid. Like the actinides immediately around it, berkelium exists only in quantities made deliberately by neutron irradiation or accelerator bombardment, and the total mass ever prepared is measured in fractions of a gram. Its practical significance lies in nuclear synthesis rather than chemistry: berkelium targets have served as the starting material from which still heavier elements were subsequently created.
