Rhenium (Re) is one of the rarest elements in Earth's crust and among the densest, a heat-resistant transition metal in group 7 of period 6, the d-block. It has an atomic mass of 186.21, the electron configuration [Xe] 4f¹⁴ 5d⁵ 6s², and a Pauling electronegativity of 1.9. Its very high melting point suits it to the nickel-based superalloys of jet-engine turbine blades, where small additions markedly improve high-temperature strength. Rhenium also serves as a catalyst in petroleum refining, notably for producing high-octane gasoline. Solid at standard conditions, it can adopt a wide range of oxidation states.
