Acerca de Radio

The isolation of radium by Marie and Pierre Curie gave radioactivity its first widely recognised chemical subject. The element occupies atomic number 88 with a relative atomic mass of 226.0, and its [Rn] 7s2 configuration places it in group 2 of period 7 as the heaviest alkaline earth metal. Its electronegativity is 0.9 and it is a solid at standard temperature and pressure. Radioactivity in radium is intense enough to excite the surrounding air and the compound matrix, which is why preparations of the element glow with a faint blue light without any external stimulus. That luminescence, once exploited commercially in self-luminous paints, is now understood as a direct visual signature of the ionising radiation that makes the element hazardous to handle.
