The third most abundant gas in Earth's atmosphere at about 0.93 percent, argon is a colorless, odorless noble gas of atomic number 18 and atomic mass 39.948. Its outer shell is complete ([Ne] 3s2 3p6), giving eight valence electrons, no ordinary chemistry, and a first ionization energy of 1521 kJ/mol; it condenses only at 87 K. Lord Rayleigh identified the gas in 1894 after finding that nitrogen from air was slightly denser than nitrogen made chemically. That inertness makes argon a practical shielding gas for welding and a filler for lighting. It belongs to group 18, period 3.
