El bismuto es el metal más diamagnético y presenta una toxicidad notablemente baja. Se usa en productos farmacéuticos (Pepto-Bismol) y cosméticos.

Acerca de Bismuto

Bismuth is the most strongly diamagnetic of the metals, a magnetic response that sets it apart from every other element in its neighbourhood of the periodic table. It occupies atomic number 83 with a relative atomic mass of 208.98, sits in group 15 of period 6, and carries the p-block configuration [Xe] 4f14 5d10 6s2 6p3 with an electronegativity of 2.02. It is solid under standard conditions and classed as a post-transition metal. Unusually for a heavy element of this region, its toxicity is remarkably low, and that single fact accounts for most of its commercial chemistry. Bismuth compounds appear in pharmaceutical preparations, the antacid Pepto-Bismol among them, and in cosmetics, where they serve as pearlescent pigments.
