Long prized for the deep blue it gives to glass and ceramics, cobalt is a hard, lustrous, bluish-gray transition metal of atomic number 27 and atomic mass 58.933. It has a density of 8.9 g/cm³ and a melting point of 1768 K. Its [Ar] 3d7 4s2 configuration gives an electronegativity of 1.88 and a first ionization energy of 760 kJ/mol. Georg Brandt first isolated the metal in 1735. Cobalt is used in heat-resistant superalloys and blue pigments, and it is a key component of lithium-ion batteries and of vitamin B12. The element belongs to group 9, period 4.
