Acerca de Mercurio

Mercury (Hg) is the only metallic element that is liquid at room temperature, a defining peculiarity among the metals. Element 80 occupies group 12 of period 6 in the d-block, with an atomic mass of 200.59, the electron configuration [Xe] 4f¹⁴ 5d¹⁰ 6s², and a Pauling electronegativity of 2.0. Its liquid state and uniform thermal expansion long made mercury the working fluid of thermometers and barometers, and it saw wide use in switches and fluorescent lighting. These applications have declined sharply, however, because mercury and its compounds are highly toxic and accumulate in the environment. The dense, silvery liquid is the heaviest member of group 12.
