Descripción general
Radium-226 emits an alpha particle to form radon-222 gas. Radium was discovered by Marie and Pierre Curie in 1898 and was the first radioactive element isolated in pure form. Marie Curie won two Nobel Prizes for her work on radioactivity. Radium's decay produces radon, a radioactive gas.

Ejemplo cotidiano
Radon gas produced by radium decay in soil seeps into basements and is the second leading cause of lung cancer after smoking.
Importancia industrial
El radio se utilizó históricamente en esferas luminosas de relojes y en terapia contra el cáncer. La monitorización de radón en los hogares es ahora una práctica estándar.
