Métodos de Prevención de la Oxidación

Comparación de galvanizado, recubrimiento con aceite y ánodos de sacrificio

Electrochemistry Beginner (Middle School) 30 min ~$8,00

Objetivo

Comparar diferentes métodos de prevención de la oxidación y comprender cómo funciona electroquímicamente la protección galvánica (ánodos de sacrificio).

Antecedentes

Iron rusts when it is oxidized by oxygen in the presence of water. Various methods can prevent this: physical barriers (oil, paint), galvanizing (zinc coating), and sacrificial anodes (zinc blocks). The galvanic methods work because zinc is more reactive than iron and corrodes preferentially.

Advertencias de seguridad

  • Handle nails carefully to avoid cuts
  • Nail polish should be used in ventilated area

EPP requerido

Materiales

  • Iron nails (6) (6)
    Identical, clean
  • Zinc strip (1 piece)
    Wrap around one nail
  • Copper wire (30 cm)
    Wrap around one nail
  • Petroleum jelly (small amount)
    For coating
  • Clear nail polish (1 bottle)
    For coating
  • Sodium chloride (NaCl) (30 g)
    Salt water accelerates rusting
  • Distilled water (300 mL)

Equipamiento

6 test tubes and rack Marker for labeling Timer

Procedimiento

1

Label six test tubes: Control, Oil, Nail Polish, Zinc, Copper, Dry.

2 min
2

Prepare nails: coat one with petroleum jelly, one with nail polish, wrap one with zinc strip, wrap one with copper wire, leave two uncoated.

8 min Use nail polish in ventilated area
3

Prepare salt water: dissolve 10 g NaCl in 100 mL water.

2 min
4

Place one prepared nail in each test tube. Add salt water to all except the Dry tube. The Dry tube gets a dry nail as additional control.

3 min
5

Observe all tubes immediately and record initial appearance.

2 min
6

Check all tubes after 24 hours, 48 hours, and 1 week. Record the extent of rust formation in each.

10 min
7

Compare results. Rank methods by effectiveness and explain the electrochemical principles.

3 min

Resultados esperados

After 1 week: Control (heavy rust), Oil (minimal rust), Nail Polish (minimal rust), Zinc-wrapped (no rust on iron, zinc corrodes instead), Copper-wrapped (accelerated rusting near copper due to galvanic corrosion), Dry (no rust). Zinc provides galvanic protection; copper accelerates corrosion.

Limpieza

Dispose of salt water down the drain. Discard rusty nails. Clean test tubes.
