NH3 + H2O ⇌ NH4+ + OH−
Descripción general
The ammonia/ammonium buffer system maintains pH near 9.25 (the pKb of ammonia corresponds to pKa of NH₄⁺ = 9.25). Ammonia acts as a weak base accepting protons when acid is added, while ammonium ions donate protons when base is added. This is one of the most commonly used basic buffer systems.

Ejemplo cotidiano
Ammonia-based cleaning solutions maintain their effectiveness because the NH₃/NH₄⁺ buffer system keeps the pH in the basic range.
Importancia industrial
Los tampones de amoníaco se utilizan en química analítica, en baños de galvanoplastia y en investigación biológica para mantener condiciones de pH básico.
