CH3COOH ⇌ CH3COO− + H+
Descripción general
The acetic acid/sodium acetate buffer system resists pH changes by shifting equilibrium in response to added acid or base. When acid is added, acetate ions consume H⁺; when base is added, acetic acid donates H⁺. This buffer is most effective near pH 4.75 (the pKa of acetic acid). The Henderson-Hasselbalch equation governs the buffer pH.
Participantes
| Rol | Sustancia | Coeficiente | Estado |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reactivo | Acetic Acid CH₃COOH | 1 | (aq) |
Ejemplo cotidiano
Vinegar-based salad dressings maintain their characteristic sour taste because the acetic acid/acetate system buffers the pH around 4.75.
Importancia industrial
Los tampones de acetato se emplean ampliamente en laboratorios de bioquímica, en procesos de tintura textil y en el procesamiento de alimentos para mantener un pH constante.
