Cr3+ + 3e− → Cr
Descripción general
Chromium plating deposits a thin layer of chromium from a chromic acid or trivalent chromium bath. Decorative chrome is only 0.25–0.5 μm thick over a nickel undercoat, while hard chrome (industrial) is 20–250 μm thick. Chrome provides exceptional hardness (68–72 HRC), corrosion resistance, and a mirror-like finish.

Ejemplo cotidiano
The shiny chrome trim on cars, bathroom fixtures, and kitchen appliances is applied by this electroplating process.
Importancia industrial
El cromado es esencial para molduras de automoción, cilindros hidráulicos, aros de pistón y rodillos industriales. Las regulaciones ambientales impulsan el cambio del cromo hexavalente al trivalente.
