Nickel-Metal Hydride Battery

MH + NiOOH → M + Ni(OH)2

Descripción general

NiMH batteries use a metal hydride anode (typically a rare earth/nickel alloy like AB₅ or AB₂) and nickel oxyhydroxide cathode in KOH electrolyte. Cell voltage is 1.2 V with energy density of 60–120 Wh/kg. They replaced NiCd batteries due to lack of toxic cadmium and higher capacity.

Ejemplo cotidiano

Rechargeable AA batteries (Eneloop, etc.) and early hybrid cars like the Toyota Prius used NiMH technology.

Importancia industrial

Las baterías NiMH alimentan millones de vehículos híbridos. El Prius de Toyota utilizó NiMH desde 1997 hasta 2015 antes de la transición a iones de litio, y siguen en producción para vehículos de alta fiabilidad.
