2SO2 + O2 → 2SO3
Descripción general
Sulfur dioxide reacts with oxygen to form sulfur trioxide in the Contact Process. This reversible reaction requires a vanadium pentoxide catalyst and temperatures around 400-450 C. It is the key step in sulfuric acid manufacturing.
Participantes
| Rol | Sustancia | Coeficiente | Estado |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reactivo | Oxygen O | 1 | (g) |
| Reactivo | Sulfur Dioxide SO₂ | 2 | (g) |
| Producto | Sulfur Trioxide SO₃ | 2 | (g) |
Ejemplo cotidiano
This reaction occurring in the atmosphere from volcanic emissions or industrial pollution contributes to acid rain formation.
Importancia industrial
El Proceso de Contacto es el principal método industrial de producción de ácido sulfúrico, el producto químico más fabricado en el mundo, con más de 200 millones de toneladas al año.
