Descripción general
Styrene undergoes free radical addition polymerization to form polystyrene. The vinyl group polymerizes while the pendant phenyl groups provide rigidity and transparency. Expanded polystyrene (EPS) foam is produced by incorporating a blowing agent during polymerization.
Ejemplo cotidiano
Styrofoam cups, food containers, packing peanuts, and insulation boards are all expanded polystyrene from this polymerization.
Importancia industrial
El poliestireno es ampliamente utilizado en envases de alimentos, aislamiento térmico (EPS) y electrónica de consumo.
